The city of Perry is the county seat of Houston County. It is originally founded as Wattsville in 1823 but was soon changed to honor naval commander Oliver Hazard Perry. Visitors would travel north to see the New Perry Hotel, which was rebuilt around the same time. The city is still an important part of the region.
