The city of Perry is the county seat of Houston County. It is originally founded as Wattsville in 1823 but was soon changed to honor naval commander Oliver Hazard Perry. Then in December 1824, the town was officially incorporated. Tourism grew in the early 1900s as Route 41 was paved, connecting the area to Florida. Visitors would travel north to see the New Perry Hotel, which was rebuilt around the same time. The city is still an important part of the region. The Perry-Houston County Airport serves Middle Georgia for general aviation and flight training.
