Leesville is home to Fort Polk, a U.S. Army installation that is the largest military base in Louisiana. It was opened as Camp Polk in 1941 as a space for the Louisiana Maneuvers, a series of Army training exercises for World War II. In the ‘50s, the camp served the 1st Armored Division, and it became a basic training post during the Vietnam War. Fort Polk helped to grow the Leesville community, and it is still an essential part of the city’s economy. Today it houses about 8,000 soldiers, 13,000 family members on and off-post, and 6,000 civilians working on post.
