Witness Texas A&M University’s Aggieland Traditions First-Hand

The beginning of College Station came with the founding of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, the first public institution of higher education in the state, in 1876. The two grew together, and now, Texas A&M University has the second largest student body in the country. It is designated as a land, sea, and space grant institution, and it is the only Texas university to hold all three. Students and sports teams are known as “Aggies.” It is also a senior military college, the largest of only six in the country. The Corps of Cadets participate in ROTC courses and training during their studies as well.

Texas A&M traditions are enjoyed by the community year-round, but especially during football season. Nothing beats Division I football in your own backyard. Aggie students play a big role in football games and are considered the 12th Man—supporting the 11 players on Kyle Field. Typically, to follow tradition, students stand throughout the game, and the 12th Man is represented by a walk-on player wearing No. 12.
