A suburb of Columbia, Irmo is located just off the eastern shore of Lake Murray. We are 12 miles from the city’s downtown—about 15 minutes by way of Interstate 126 East. Irmo’s name comes from combining the names of two prominent people in the founding of the town: Captain C.J. Iredell and Henry Moseley. It was chartered in 1890 after the area began to see more traffic from the opening of the Columbia, Newberry and Laurens Railroad, and it became a refueling stop for the trains. The town stayed quite rural until the late 1960s when it started to see some steady growth. Then toward the end of the next decade, Irmo grew rapidly. Now, there is plenty to do between the nearby water activities and city life. Explore it for yourself!

Though Irmo has grown significantly in the past few decades, it still holds its strong sense of close community. Enjoy a walk around town through the different parks, spend a day on the lake, and do not forget to check out the The Okra Strut Festival, Irmo’s annual town celebration. The tradition began in in the early ’70s when the Lake Murray-Irmo Woman’s Club wanted to raise funds to start a library in Irmo. Listening to a local radio personality gave them the idea to hold an arts and crafts fair and serve fried okra. They held this festival every year until there were enough funds to build the library, and they have continued it since. The two-day event features rides, live music, a parade, and so much more. See why Irmo residents look forward it every year!
