Humble, TX, is a Houston suburb, located about 20 minutes north, along Spring Creek. The area was first settled in the early 1800s, but the city’s namesake didn’t come to area until right before the Civil War. Pleasant Smith Humble operated a ferry along the San Jacinto River after acquiring land, served as the justice of the peace for the region, and in 1886, he opened up a post office in his home. Thus, the town adopted the Humble name.
Thanks to the region’s abundance of timber resources, Humble started to build its industry. A huge sawmill was constructed, and the city became a hub for transporting lumber. The 1900s saw the beginnings of oil production. And three years after it began, Humble’s oil field was the largest producing one in Texas. When oil producing started to decline, land owners turned back to lumber, dairy farming, and truck farming.
Now, Humble is still prominent in the region’s economy and social entertainment. Its history is celebrated annually through the Good Oil Days Festival. Live bands play on the grand stage, while the beer garden and kids zone entertain attendees. You can win cash prizes through the Oil Boom Raffle and take home gorgeous flower baskets in the “famous plant sale.” It is a must-experience event if you live in or near Humble!
Trying to spend some time outdoors? Mercer Botanic Gardens is 393 acres of beautiful gardens, trails, and ponds. Go for a stroll, or make an afternoon of it by visiting the pavilions and playgrounds for some fun in the sun. If you are an animal lover, another place you have to check out is Old MacDonald’s Farm. In business for more than 30 years, the farm features train rides, pony rides, and a petting zoo! It also hosts seasonal activities, like a pumpkin picking, swimming, holiday photos, and more.
